-----------------
I am near the end of my run here on the Mercury, and I saw something tonight that really got my wheels turning. I went to a show tonight called The Best of Broadway. It was basically a montage of several famous Broadway hits. Everything from Phantom of the Opera, to Les Mis, to Lion King, to... well you get the point.
I thoroughly enjoyed the show, though I was shocked that it didnt get a standing ovation. It closed with a number from Lion King singing Circle of Life and the singers and dancers were amazing, the costumes incredible, the lighting and sound were spot on, and everything was a solid A+. Still no standing ovation. The crowd was very enthusiastic, its just that that little extra wall of standing up that didnt get broken through.
I was thinking about starting it myself, though as an audience member I am as shy as anyone. No one wants to be the first to stand up and I am no exception, though often times all it takes is one person near the front to stand and a theatre of 1,500 will follow.
However immediately after the bow, the MC came out on stage and told all of the dancers to stay onstage for a moment. He made some comments about the show and whatnot, and standard thank you - a thank you to the cast before things took a dramatic turn Music came on, and he mentioned that this performance would be particularly memorable for one of the dancers. Her boyfriend of a couple years came out from the side wing onstage, got down on one knee and proposed. As many times as you see a proposal, it always has the same effect. Everyone in the theatre including myself was wiping tears from our eyes, and then it happened..a standing ovation. Like a wave across the theatre, over a thousand people were on their feet in less than 5 seconds.
So here is the situation. A show- no matter how finely delivered, no matter how well performed can still fail to get a standing ovation. Yet, a man comes out on stage and gets on a knee, and everyone in the theatre including myself cannot help but to jump to our feet, cry, and cheer louder than we did all show.
Why? Because of a simple theory Ive always believed to be true about performing, (and anyone who has ever seen me perform live probably rolls their eyes because at times I go too far with it.) No one cares about what they are watching until their emotions are involved. There can be multimillion dollar productions that have enough electricity going through the lighting board to send a man to the moon, but a simple heartfelt moment in a show from a performer will always be the thing that people remember. For years I've toyed with an appropriate level of emotion in a show, as there is an appropriate line to walk. Cross it and you ruin everyones evening and bring down the mood. Fall short of it, and no one cares.
Tonight was just perfect though. Entertaining on all levels, and here I am even 2 hours after the show with a warm feeling inside. It is bold, though honest to say that being a part of that experience tonight made my whole week.
Basically what all of this sums up to, is that after seeing this tonight I have decided on a new closing act for my show. Im going to propose after every show to someone. Problem solved
Until next time
